Frequently asked Questions and Answers:
TEETH WHITENING INFORMATION
WHAT IS TEETH WHITENING?
It is a whitening process that lightens the shade of the enamel and dentine by removing discolouration.
WHAT CAUSES TEETH DISCOLOURATION?
There are many causes. The most common include ageing, cosumption of staining substances i.e. tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curry etc. Discolouration may also be caused by tooth trauma, nerve degeneration and old restorations.
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM TEETH WHITENING?
Almost anyone. Having a whiter, brighter and younger looking smile adds to your self-confidence. Having your teeth whitened can make you look and feel more attractive.
WHAT IS 1 HOUR LASER WHITENING?
This treatment is carried out in the clinic and is ideal for those who want fast and effective results. The whitening gel is applied directly onto the teeth and a state of the art laser is used to activate the gel, resulting in lighter and brighter teeth. You can expect to lift up to 10 shades in just 1 hour.
WHAT IF I WANT TO WHITNEN MY TEETH AT HOME?
If you prefer you can whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home using our custom made trays and whitening gel. This treatment uses a mild “oxygen releasing” gel and is simple and effective for those who want a more gradual and discreet whitening effect. Simply apply the gel using the trays for 30 minutes per day. You can expect to lift 3 to 5 shades lighter in just 5 days. However, depending on the amount of discolouration you have you may choose to continue whitening for up to 10 days until you achieve the desired results.
HOW DOES THE TEETH WHITENING PROCESS WORK?
Both the laser whitening and the home gel work along the same lines. Oxygen releasing gel is placed on the surface of your teeth. As the oxygen enters the enamel and the dentine it whitens the colour substance and draws out any discoloration. Only the tooth colour is altered and made lighter while the enamel and dentine structure remain unchanged. Both processes work safely and effectively and achieve desirable effects.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Some people experience some sensitivity to hot and cold drinks after treatment. You should not feel alarmed by this as it is very common and will go away within 24 to 48 hours after completing your treatment. This is more common when using the home gel and can be reduced by avoiding citrus fruits or anything predominately acidic.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The average person will drop 2 to 3 shades per year so on average it lasts 3 years. However you can maintain your colour for longer by topping up with home gel once a month just for 30 minutes. The home gel will lift your teeth ½ to 1 shade per treatment.
